Celebrating Artistic Innovation: Announcing the Inaugural Recipient of the Serein Properties Visual Arts Award

Serein Properties proudly announces Kaleb Thiessen as the inaugural recipient of the Serein Properties Visual Arts Award. Established in partnership with The School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) at Simon Fraser University (SFU), this annual award honours exceptional talent in sculpture and installation arts, supporting emerging visual artists.

Kaleb’s journey into visual arts began with a shift from studying communications, driven by his family’s artistic background and personal quest for creative expression. At SCA, he immersed himself in a cohort-style program that sparked his passion. His work straddles the digital and physical worlds, merging art with functionality through innovative use of found materials and digital displays. His installations challenge traditional boundaries, creating thought-provoking pieces that engage deeply with themes of consumerism, technology, and time.

Notable works like “SQUATTED CONSUMING” (March 2023) and “Piece!(   )Peace?” (March 2024) encourage viewers to reflect on their relationship with technology and the material world. These works exhibit Kaleb’s extraordinary ability to provoke visceral responses, challenging conventional perceptions of art.

“It is truly an honour and so meaningful to receive this award, particularly during this last stage of my undergraduate journey,” shares Kaleb Thiessen. “The financial support is vital, however, knowing my efforts and creative practice are valued and that someone believes in my talent — that they believe art is worthwhile — is even more powerful. It’s incredible motivation to keep doing what I love.”

His education took a global dimension with the SCA Berlin field school, enriching his understanding of art’s power to memorialize history and influence future narratives. As Kaleb steps into new professional realms, including artist residencies, the Serein Properties Visual Arts Award stands as both recognition and inspiration. He views it as a catalyst for further exploring creativity, particularly the intersection of technology and human expression.

Founded by SCA alumnus, Serein Properties collaborates with SFU to foster creativity and innovation, underscoring a shared commitment to integrating arts within the community. Dedicated to nurturing visionary artists, Serein Properties eagerly anticipates inspiring and supporting future talent through next year’s award.
